Seven Energy Facts for Guyana

1. The main source of energy in Guyana are imported petroleum products, bagasse and fuelwood. As a guide, petroleum imports in 2014 was approximately 32% of total imports, mostly used for electricity generation and transportation. 



2. Fossil fuels generated 91.8% of total electricity generation in 2014 with less than 1% from solar photovoltaics and wind sources. 



3. Initiatives to improve energy efficiency include the incandescent bulbs replacement programme, tax exemption for energy efficient products and solar appliances, street lighting maintenance; and promotion of energy efficient wood stoves. 



4. Power transmission losses has been on a reducing trend since 2000. 



5. Approximately 1750 solar photovoltaic systems were installed in homes, schools and other community buildings within 21 rural communities, under the Unserved Areas Electrification Programme. This programme also promotes the collection of wind data. 



6. Guyana had a target of 20%, 28% and 47% renewable electricity generation to be reached by 2017, 2022 and 2027 respectively. Planned programs included the development of a 165 MW Amaila Falls hydropower project due to be completed in 2025 and 30MW biomass cogeneration plant.  



7. Guyana is set to become one of the largest exporter of fossil fuels in the Caribbean following several discoveries within its offshore area.
