1. The National Climate Change Policy document aims to “maximize renewable energy resources, clean energy and clean production technology” through a combination of legislative framework, research, education and investment towards greener sources of energy.
2. The National Climate Change policy outlines the establishment of renewable energy standards, encourages the efficient use of energy and renewable energy research and promotes CNG and hybrid vehicles.
3. The National Environment Policy aimed for 10% power generation from renewables by 2021. As of 2019 year end, fossil fuels accounted for over 99% of the energy mix and this has not changed significantly since then.
4. Natural gas replaced diesel fuel for electricity generation in 1953. The country also saw a move away from flaring natural gas and its use for electricity production. The country continues to produce all of its electricity from natural gas.
5. A Climate Change Ministerial Committee (CCMC) was established by T&T's Cabinet in 2011 to facilitate high-level, cross-sectoral implementation of national climate change policies and projects across all ministries and agencies. Coordination of climate change issues is currently performed by the Multilateral Environmental Agreements Unit under the Ministry of Planning and Development.
6. Natural gas is used to drive the diversification effort and renewable goals, exemplified in the construction of CNG stations and CNG vehicle conversion kits. At least 10% of the public transport bus fleet use 100% CNG fuel. These measures are ongoing with a parallel phasing-out of gasoline fuel subsidies.
7. There is an intent to include solar energy into the energy supply grid with a consortium between BPTT, Shell and Lightsource bpTT for 112 megawatts solar Photo voltaic project to begin in 2022.
8. Government Policy encourages energy efficiency within government compounds and buildings through the usage of energy efficient LED lighting, promotion of energy efficient technology and a lights-off policy mandated for all buildings.
